The Longship

 

The longship is able to jump over other pieces by moving 1 square orthogonally, then in the same direction 2 squares diagonally (like a knight jumps), the full move must be taken. see new pieces

 

 

The Jarl

 

The Jarl cannot leap over other pieces, but has an initial 1, 2 or 3 step move similar to the pawn, this can be taken in any single direction including orthogonally and diagonally. see new pieces

 

Longships Chess

 

Longships Chess restores the creativity of normal Chess which has become by its orthodoxy, a labyrinth of well memorised patterns, this new game moves quickly through new landscapes and into challenging endgames.

 

To facilitate this concept the traditional Lewis chess set with two additional pieces have been used. Longships Chess recreates the element of surprise by the use of the longships’ ability to travel up shallow rivers and behind an opponent’s defence lines. The traditional Lewis chess set may well have evolved from improved variants of period chess games of that era.
